First thing is to create and install any project using your version of InstallBuilder (preferably with also the uninstall.exe windows resources such as application name being set properly), then use the created uninstaller.exe and sign it. InstallBuilder's comprehensive cross-platform support has proven invaluable to us, giving our customers a consistent installation experience no matter what operating system they run on as well as reducing our development costs by avoiding the need to support multiple technologies. Unfortunately, getting PHP running-and hooked to Microsoft SQL Server - on Windows is tricky at best and left us spending a significant amount of time with our customers to get them up and running. HelpSpot, a PHP application, is generally a breeze to install on Linux or Unix.

![]() The answer Prefis believes is that there are many authors of technical and educational material who would prefer to format and arrange their own material. So who will use the Book Machine? It is after all a do-it-yourself composition system and most authors restrict their role to writing and leave composition to printers. In a 1984 piece in the FID News Bulletin, the outlet tried to make sense of who the audience might be for such a tool, and came up with this: Not cheap, especially for a machine dedicated to typesetting. At the time, it went for £5,980, roughly $8,000 based on exchange rates of the time-and £17,363 today ($19,129). It was ambitious, but you very much paid for that ambition. It produced disks capable of managing phototypesetting tools without needing any additional steps, meaning its use case was working with existing phototypesetting technology rather than its own separate thing like many DTP tools of the era were. One of the earliest examples of a computer built around typesetting, this machine, produced by Prefis, could capably set type on a page at sizes between 6 points and 48 points, in a variety of forms-including paragraph and headline sizes. First, one only has to point to Xerox’s legacy in copiers and printers as being compatible with the needs of a publisher.Īdditionally, computer historians who have researched this stuff in-depth, such as Ken Shirriff, have convincingly made the argument that the Alto represented a desktop publishing platform before desktop publishing was given that name, citing the fact that the handbook for the computer was actually laid out using the computer, the Alto’s typography capabilities, and that the publishing tools were commercialized, albeit poorly. Looking at the Xerox Alto, the computer that inspired Apple to create the Macintosh, as a machine that could be used to lay out and publish things might to some degree fudge the “desktop publishing” definition for some, but the case for it is pretty strong. But that doesn’t mean it’s necessarily wrong. This one is likely going to be controversial with someone, which I fully admit is true. And while we’ve landed on a few standards, a lot of desktop publishing tools failed to make to it the present day. And with the decline of print as a medium, it can feel kind of old hat, but lots of stuff still gets typeset every single day. While at its heart a mishmash of hardware and software cleverly combined for a single goal, it was an empire builder, one that helped create new businesses and improve the status and positioning of existing ones. ![]() Today in Tedium: It’s easy to forget now, but desktop publishing was an immensely innovative thing when it emerged within the computing industry in the early ’80s. ![]() Click the icon later and it'll open in an IE window. Inevitably, effective decision-making skills involve working with other people. It’s a highly desirable skill set to include on your CV, with demand for workers with specialist data skills more than tripling in recent years. But specifically they involve your ability to look at data and information, spot patterns in it, interpret it, consider new data and make decisions based on those factors. They’re used to solve problems and make decisions. Having good problem-solving skills ensures you’ll be able to make effective decisions based on a solid understanding of the facts to hand.Īrguably, analytical skills are a type of problem-solving skill, but there’s a little more to it. They’re also considered highly valuable by employers across all industries. These skills help you determine the causes of a problem and find a good solution. Problem-solving and decision-making skills go hand in hand. And they cover a surprisingly broad set of abilities. But although different careers have different frameworks and motivations that drive the decision-making process, the basic skills used remain the same. There are various subsets of decision-making that apply to particular careers, for example medical and ethical decision-making skills feature heavily in the healthcare field. But we can and should use reasoning as a sense check to ensure we’ve made the best decision based on the facts of the situation.Īnd to give you a sense of the complexity of making a good decision, take a look at the steps involved in the decision-making process. Indeed, sometimes intuitive decisions are effective. Being human, we can’t eliminate gut feelings and pre-conceptions. In reality, we generally use a mix of the two. It’s a more accurate way of coming to a decision as it’s less likely to be coloured by your own preconceptions, and it’s the way important decisions in the workplace should be made. Reasoning involves analysing the information you have available and making a decision based purely on those facts. Reasoning on the other hand is objective and based on the data you have available to you. An intuitive decision is made based on your personal opinions, past experiences, perceptions and emotions. It’s your instinctive reaction when you’re faced with a problem to solve or decision to make. So let’s take a closer look at intuition and reasoning in decision-making. They’re actually a wide range of abilities that are used in a complex process. It’s important to understand that decision-making skills aren’t just one thing. For the common 50 Ohm system, the center of the chart would be “normalized” to 1.0 units. The center of the chart (r = 1.0 and x = 0) is always a “perfect match,” at least for a desired 50 Ohm, but can be any impedance you want. Once you plot the impedance point, other parameters - like Voltage Standing Wave Ratio (VSWR) or return loss - can be read off the Smith Chart. On the Smith Chart, the phase is actually the distance in wavelengths along the transmission line - the outer-most circle. Polar means there is a real part - the magnitude of the impedance point (or Γ L ) and the phase of the impedance. ![]() The reactance curves on the top half of the chart are inductance curves most notable are the 0.9 and 1.0 curves at the top that curve down to the right hand center. There are resistance circles from 0 to “∞” Ohms. The reflection coefficient Γ L is related to the load impedance Z L and the system impedance Z o as: We know the reflection coefficient Γ L is defined as the ratio between the reflected voltage wave and the incident voltage wave, as shown in Figure 1. Sometimes, instead of considering the load impedance directly, you express its reflection coefficient, Γ L. A Smith Chart is utilized by examining the load and where the impedance must be matched. The Smith Chart is a polar plot of the complex reflection coefficient, Γ, for a normalized complex load impedance Zn = R + jX, where R is the resistance and X the reactance. There is some algebra involved in understanding the basic transmission line equations, but - once you understand how to move on the graph - you can forget the math and just read the chart. What Is a Smith Chart?Īlthough there are many computer programs 2, 3 and network analyzers that can solve impedance matching problems for you, a complete understanding of the Smith Chart is highly beneficial in understanding the nature of transmission lines. This chart closely resembles the chart we see today. According to his biography, his impedance coordinates were not orthogonal - which means perpendicular - and there were no true circles, but the standing wave ratio was linear. The first graphical chart was limited by the range of data so he came up with a polar plot that was a scaled version of the first plot. He used a thermocouple bridge and voltmeter to make the measurements. Smith developed the first graphical solution in the form of a rectangular plot from his measurements of the maxima and minima voltages along the transmission line. Phillip Smith - Inventor of the Smith Chart. He relished the problem of matching the transmission line to the antenna a component he considered matched the line to space. ![]() Although Smith did a great deal of work with antennas, his expertise and passion focused on transmission lines. In 1928, he joined Bell Labs, where he became involved in the design of antennas for commercial AM broadcasting. After reading this, you will have a better understanding of impedance matching and VSWR - common parameters in a radio station. The purpose of this article is to introduce you to the basics of the Smith Chart. The Smith chart can be used to simultaneously display multiple parameters including impedances, admittances, reflection coefficients, S n n is defined as the ratio of the reflected wave to the incident (or forward) wave. The Smith Chart is one of the most useful tools in radio communications, but it is often misunderstood.
